In Tokyo, a young woman is exposed to the same mysterious curse that afflicted her sister. The supernatural force, which fills a person with rage before spreading to its next victim, brings together a group of previously unrelated people who attempt to unlock its secret to save their lives.
Teresa Palmer plays Vanessa. She is one of the three girls at a bording school in Japan. Although the film has many characters, Teresa gets a great deal of screentime and this is her first role which was really available to the most people. It's easy to see how she'd get a new set of fans after the role. While her character is nothing more than the cliched Mean Girl, she does a good job, needless to say, looking absolutely terrified.
Filmed in Tokyo, Japan.
Received 2 nominations.
Sony Pictures green-lighted this sequel just three days after The Grudge (2004) was released.
Director Takashi Shimizu went to Los Angeles to meet with producers Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi in a small office at Columbia Pictures. The purpose was to develop a story outline for the sequel's first draft, which also involved employees from Tapert and Raimi's production company Ghost House Pictures, producer Taka Ichise, and writer Stephen Susco. According to Tapert, the session was roughly seven or eight hours of people suggesting ideas for the story.
To keep the mood on the set light, the actors and director would often joke around and attempt to frighten one another. This included a Karaoke session performed by Shimizu, Takashi on Kebbel, Arielle's birthday.
The role of Vanessa was originally written for Vanessa Lengies, who eventually turned it down to film My Suicide; the part still bares her name.
On the "Columbia" logo screen before the feature, the standard logo appears normal for a moment, then the hair grows and the Columbia statuette turns to Kayako as the word "Columbia" changes to Grudge 2. The screen flashes for a moment as this happens.
Miyuki: "They say it is one of the most haunted houses in all of Japan." Vanessa: "Yeah, and that anyone who enters gets the curse."
"That's where she lives."
Vanessa: "Uuuh, you were the one who wanted to go in!"
"It was all very Lost in Translation but it was the kind of experience I'll hold for the rest of my life, You have to grow up really quickly."
"I was the bitchy schoolgirl. The mean one. She gets killed."
"I shot December Boys two years ago when I was 19 and then I went ahead and did The Grudge 2 right after that; my first American movie."
Before I sound too harsh, I will say I did not like the first film at all... So, needless to say, I did not care at all for the second film. I did, however, see it, and oddly enough this film made me a aware and also a fan of Teresa Palmer. I didn't like the film itself at all. The story is way too messy, there are too many characters and none get enough time to be developed. I know, I know this isn't an "Oscar worthy" film and no, it's not the worst thing ever made, but that's still a pretty crappy excuse as it wasn't even solid entertainment for me. The thing I also absolutely hated was you saw everything in the trailers so really there was nothing to be scared of being you saw it all months before the film's released... I'm really tired of the whole Japan-remake craze right now too.
Long story short. If you are going to see this film, the only thing worthy of noting is a strong performance from Amber Tamblyn and Teresa Palmer in her first widely seen role. Palmer also looks incredibly stunning, even if it's totally vain to say. Yeah, I really hated this... But hey! Don't say I didn't warn you! - Mycah
